Dear Readers
July 20, 2010
Hot enough for ya?
It is certainly summer in southwest Florida, but word on the street--or perhaps it should be "word on the beach?"--is that it's actually hotter up North right now. Could that be right? Are all you Bostonians and New Yorkers melting? Come on down then. I'm happy to report that the St. Pete, Sarasota, Ft. Myers, and Naples beaches are still soft, sparkling, and free of oil.
If you can't manage a vacation on the Gulf of Mexico, you can always pick up a copy of BETWEEN FRIENDS and pretend that you're here. Additional word on the beach says that it's finally available for the Kindle, what with Penguin and Amazon retiring to their individual corners to lick their battle wounds.
Now that the initial publicity push for BETWEEN FRIENDS is over, and a move to a new town (with all the attendant ceiling fan and light hanging, unpacking, putting together of bookcases, and so forth) finally achieved, I am settling down to finish my new novel, A THOUSAND CRANES.
I'll keep you posted.
In the meantime, I wish you all cool breezes and great reading...

Between Friends is less than two months away from publication, and reviews will be trickling in. Publishers Weekly is first up, and has this to say:
Kiernan (Catching Genius) again demonstrates her ability to portray true-to-life relationships between women. Ali Gutierrez is mother to 15-year-old Letty thanks to the egg donation of her best friend, Cora. Ali wants to have another child, but first has to convince her husband, Benny, and then Cora, to endure the process one more time.
Cora, a free-spirit who's just returned to America from a teaching excursion in Chile, has news of her own—she has a debilitating genetic kidney disease, and she's not sure how to break the news to Ali. Meanwhile, Letty's going through growing pains with her bad-news boyfriend, and when poor choices begin endangering her life, it takes all three of her parents—Benny, Ali, and Cora—to try to save her.
With realistic dialogue and pinpointed emotions, Kiernan paints a persuasive portrait of the bonds between mothers, daughters, and friends in this inspiring, heartbreaking tale. (Apr.)

Happy New Year! Despite Florida's chilly weather (yes, it does get cold down here--perhaps not your definition of cold, but cold enough to make me refuse to leave the house for anything but an extra-hot dirty chai latte), we had a wonderful holiday at Chez Kiernan, and I hope your family did also.
My best wishes to you and yours for a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year!

Whew--what a busy month! Lots of travel (complete with the requisite cold), final manuscript tweaks for Between Friends, working on the new novel (title still under wraps!), and, of course, the holidays. If all that isn't enough, we're also moving! Ahh, the joys of packing...
The good news continues, and appearances for Between Friends are being scheduled. More are added each week, so check the Appearances page if you'd like to come say hello and get a signed book.
In the meantime, I wish you all a wonderful holiday season. Be sweet to each other.

Is it just wishful thinking, or is the heat finally breaking in southwest Florida? Maybe it's just all the recent good news blowing in like a cool breeze.
The months leading up to a new book being published are exciting and filled with possibilities. It seems that each week brings some fresh news, and though it can be a time of anxiety and uncertainty, it's also an opportunity to examine how we react to change. I'm relabeling my anxiety as "excitement," and so far that seems to be working out all right. I'll keep you posted.
One bit of news I can pass on is that Between Friends has been selected as a Featured Alternate for the Doubleday, Literary Guild, and Rhapsody Book Clubs. If you're a member, be sure to watch for it!
Appearances are also being scheduled for the Between Friends tour. If you'd like to see me in your town, the best way to get me there is to ask the Community Relations Manager of your favorite bookstore to ask their Penguin/Berkley representative for a visit from me. Like anything else in life, if there's enough demand, someone will supply.
Check the Appearances page to see if I'll be coming to your town. If so, I hope to see you there!
Happy Thanksgiving,

As humidity finally starts to lose its moist, sticky grip on South Florida, I find myself enjoying walks again. Aside from seeing neighbors I haven't seen during the summer, welcoming back our snowbirds, and getting some much needed exercise, a walk always helps to clear my mind when I'm writing. And every once in a while, a walk can help an important cause.
I'm very happy to announce that I'll be the Honorary Chair of FAAN's Walk for Food Allergy in Tampa, Florida on November 14th. FAAN is the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network, and if you know anyone whose life has been affected by food allergies, or you've read Matters of Faith, then you know how important it is to educate the public about food allergies.
Please consider visiting their website to create a team, join a team, or donate, and become a fan on their Facebook page to get updated information. If you're in the southwest Florida area, I'd love to see you on the walk. Thank you so much for your support of this important cause.

Between Friends is now available for pre-order on Amazon! It has yet to be posted on IndieBound (7/29 edit: just went up on IndieBound, 8/24 up on B&N) or Barnes & Noble, but once it's up on Amazon, those are never far behind.
It's always an exciting day when your book goes "official" online. Before publication, only one other day can top it: the day you get your cover. And I couldn't be more pleased with the new cover that arrived this week. Check it out on the Between Friends page and let me know what you think.
Once you get there you'll notice that there are already a few "Extras," which should give you some hints about the book. And if you feel like pre-ordering while you're perusing those links, well, go right ahead.

Welcome to my new website! I'm delighted you stopped by. There are a lot of new things to see here, so grab some iced tea and have a look around.
Each book now has its very own page, and those pages have all sorts of information on them, including info about how I came to write it, reviews, links to reading group guides, and some fun extras. There's also a Frequently Asked Questions page for answers to the questions that pop up most often, and if you'd like autographed copies of my books, well, now there's a page for that too.
Let me know how you like the new look, and if there's anything else you'd like to see here. And, as always, thanks for reading!
